Spotlight: Michael Chatterton, National Property Specialist, ParioQuantify

06 February 2020

Michael Chatterton was brought on to support ParioQuantify’s Insurance & Construction restoration services. Drawing on more than 25 years’ experience in the insurance industry, Michael works closely with other appraisers and the insured, and coordinates with contractors to determine the best course of action to ensure that each and every claim is processed in a fair, efficient, and timely manner.  He works primarily with insurers and contractors where he helps support a massive portfolio of complex, large loss claims in both residential and commercial lines.

“Closing out a claim is all about finding a balance,” Michael says. “You always need to consider factors like business interruption, whether to repair or replace, and the overall scope of work.”

As a seasoned damage appraiser and restoration expert, Michael has advanced training and certifications in mould assessment and inspection, fire and water restoration, air quality assessment, radon measurement, structural drying, carpet repair & reinstallation, and much more.

For Michael, restoration has always been a family affair. His father owned a restoration company, and from the age of 15, Michael began to fully immerse himself in anything and everything the industry had to offer. “I never had a free March break from school,” Michael says. “I was working; I had to learn everything from the ground up.”

An early introduction to the industry through his father’s business allowed Michael to have a unique, hands-on perspective of the restoration process, leading to him developing the reputation as “that guy” when it comes to getting jobs done efficiently and accurately. For example, while working with a ClaimsPro adjuster, Michael was sent to Ottawa to inspect a property in which damages were estimated to be in excess of 300,000 dollars. After his inspection was completed, Michael was able to reduce the cost of repairs to 80,000 dollars—nearly 75 percent lower than the original estimate.

“You need to look over the whole claim, not just the building,” says Michael. “It’s all about the big picture.”  When Michael works with adjusters, he helps to guide them and passes along some of his more in-depth experience that only comes with years of hands-on practice in restoration.

Michael is based out of Quantify’s Markham, Ontario office. He frequently consults with adjusters across the country offering advice on challenging files, including the best techniques to accurately scope large loss claims in a variety of loss scenarios.
